what have you learnt from your audience feedback?
Firstly, I needed to create a target audience profile for my film trailer and film. This would make my marketing of the film more efficient as I could focus on advertising at people with a direct interest. It also helped me identiy what codes and conventions i would need in order for my taret audience to enjoy watching the fuilm trailer, an want to watch the film. My research into my target audience is linked to the right.
I produced a rough cut of my film trailer and showed it to a variety of people within my target audience to gain other people's perspective on how I could improve my film trailer. The rough cut is shown to the right.
I created a survey for my audience to complete to see what I needed to focus on. The questions I used are shown in the word document below. I received a variety of answers to the different questions. I made some of the questions open ended so I could collect more information about the viewers opinions. The results I collected are shown in graphs in the PowerPoint below.
I learnt from this audience feedback that I needed to improve my rough cut to make my film trailer as professional and interesting as possible. For the first question (Have I got enough use of props? ) I discovered that I needed to include more props thus I added a phone as a prop to enhance the idea that Tom is wasting his life away and not enjoying quality time with his parents. Therefore, this emphasises to the audience just how much the crash affected him as he did not appreciate them whilst they were still around. The increase of props give more information about the characters and location go give the audience an insight into the storyline of the film, by leaving hermeneutic codes.
The second question was about the amount of locations. My audience thought more locations were needed, so I increased them by including the setting of the park. This created more depth to my film trailer, and the mise en scene explained slightly more of the storyline.
The third question was about the gradient wipe transition used for the shots between Tom's eyes and the living room scene. Most people's feedback was positive about this transition because they thought it was unique and creative. However, some people thought that a fade to black fitted the conventions of a film trailer s it builds up more suspense. I took on this advice and added more fade to black transitions within my film trailer, but kept the gradient wipe as well. This meant I adapted my film trailer to suit everyone's preferences.
Next, the question stated whether the text should be put at the end explaining the storyline, or throughout. Most people thought at the end as by giving the audience a snippet of the storyline at the end it leaves them on a cliff hanger, making them want to watch on. By putting the titles about the storyline throughout, the suspense was not built up effectively. Therefore, due to the feedback I was confident to keep the titles at the end to create a climax of suspense.
The fifth question included whether more fast paced shots were needed. Fast pace shots are key in a film trailer as they build up the drama. I wasn't sure whether I had included enough, thus the feedback informed me that I needed more to make the purpose of my trailer more efficient. I adapted my product by including more fast paced shots and shortening the cuts.
Lastly, the question stated: Is the news report scene needed or shall I include it as a voiceover? I felt that the shots of the news report did not look professional, and were not necessarily needed. Most people agreed with this within the survey thus I deleted the cuts and recorded a voiceover and placed it over the footage in Premier Pro. This also gave the audience something to listen to, which they could not see thus intriguing them.
In essence, I learnt various things from my audience feedback to make my film trailer the best it could be and to suit my target audience profile. By making it a better quality, it enables more people to potentially watch the film Distortion, which fulfills the purpose of a film trailer. My final trailer, which was improved upon from the advice of my audience survey, is attached below.
