How did you use ideas and conventions of real media texts?

In my film trailer, we used conventions from other trailers from the thriller genre and post- modern theme as inspiration for my own. These included the title, the distributor and producer, the billing block, and the actors within the film. ” These featured in every film trailer I watched thus play a key role in creating a film trailer. Examples of this are in  such as 'Justice League' (shown in the picture on the right). We used this within our own because it is a key convention of a film trailer as it makes the audience aware of who created the film that would normally be to follow.

I also used the post-modern idea of the mind being able to split into two realities. I used this idea from the tv series Awake, in which the Father lives in two worlds, one where his wife died, and one where his son died. I really liked this idea as it really makes the audience contradict what they previously thought and put they can put themselves in the main character’s position. I used this in my film trailer by Tom having to figure out whether his Mum or Dad died in the car crash, as he experiences two lives. It also reflects the film The Butterfly Effect as it shows that one small decision can have a massive impact on the future.

I used the idea of using a piano as part of the music soundtrack. I observed the Gone Girl film trailer and really admired the effect in which the piano created a melancholic atmosphere whilst keeping the audience on edge as it came across as slightly eerie. This emphasised the thriller genre. I wanted this same effect in my film trailer, so I used GarageBand and found a loop which included a piano.

In addition, costumes were included for our mise en scene which matched the stereotype of a teenage boy. This is because Tom wore tracksuits and casual clothing to emphasise his young nature, thus emphasising his difficulty in understanding in what is happening to his mind. This also making it evident what character he was. Therefore, we used the convention of a stereotypical teenage boy, which is commonly used in real media text such as Attack on the Block, where the young characters were dressed very casually, representing the time and where the film was set.

Lastly, I used an idea from Alice in Wonderland, where time is a key concept. The rabbit constantly looks at his watch and keeps check of the time. I used the prop of a watch in my film trailer to express how Tom’s time is being distorted by the two realities, so he keeps check of it to try and discover some sort of reality. This gave more depth to my film trailer and gave the audience another thing to think about.
